What is Asphalt?

Asphalt concrete pavement mixes are typically composed of 5% asphalt/bitumen cement and 95% aggregates (stone, sand, and gravel). Due to its highly viscous nature,asphalt/bitumen cement must be heated so that it can be mixed with the aggregates at the asphalt mixing facility.

What Are the Main Benefits of Asphalt?

When choosing to use asphalt for your driveway, road, or parking lotyou will not be dissatisfied. Asphalt is cost-efficient, durable, easy to maintain, and even facilitates noise reduction. Asphalt is very beneficial and will leave a lasting impression for years to come.

How Can I Protect My Asphalt?

An asphalt paved surface is an investment that’s well worth protecting. In order to protect your asphalt pavement, you will have to seal the driveway with a topcoat sealer. Before you seal the asphalt pavement, you will have to do take the following steps.

  • Look for trouble spots - Make note of any cracks, oily stains, potholes, or areas that are crumbling.
  • Scrub away stains - If you find oil or grease stains, try to remove them with hot water and brush them out. Other alternatives include using an oil eater or krud ketter.
  • Fill in cracks -Most driveways will have a few cracks, which can easily be fixed with an asphalt sealer. However, if you don’t fix the cracks right away, they can expand and become more difficult and expensive to fix. So make sure to fill the cracks ASAP!
  • Patch Potholes - If you don’t fix the cracks in your asphalt surface they may eventually form potholes. Potholes cause several problems and can destroy your paved surface, along with the vehicles that are using the paved surface.
  • Prep driveway. Make sure all debris is gone before applying the seal coat so that your surface will be nice and smooth.

By following this list, your driveway will be ready for an asphalt sealcoating to keep your asphalt paved surface looking new.

What Time of Year is Best for Sealcoating?

Ideally, days above 50 degrees and nights not lower than 40 degrees are ideal to sealcoat an asphalt paved surface. In the Midwest, this typically means between the months of April through most of October.

Is the Lowest Price Always the Best Option?

It all depends on the severity of your asphalt paved area. If your driveway is damaged, then you might have to pay a lot of money to resurface it. But minor damages can be easily fixed and usually don't cost much.

We hope that the importance of your driveway or your business’s asphalt parking lot is of importance to you and that you will consider the asphalt repair and maintenance FAQ checklist when you need assistance on whether or not to resurface your parking lot or driveway.
